Beginner’s Guide to Cannabis in Michigan: What’s Legal + What to Expect

First time dispensary visit in michigan?

If you’re new to cannabis, or just new to shopping in Michigan, welcome. A lot of first time customers have the same questions:
  • What’s legal?
  • How much can I buy?
  • What happens when I walk into a dispensary?
This guide breaks it down in simple terms so you can feel confident before your first visit.

Is Cannabis Legal in Michigan?

Yes – cannabis is legal in Michigan for adults 21+.
You can legally purchase cannabis from licensed dispensaries with a valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.).

What Are the Legal Limits in Michigan?

Here are the main legal purchase and possession limits in Michigan:
  • Up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis in public
  • Up to 10 ounces stored at home
  • Up to 15 grams of concentrate (like wax, vape oil, etc.)

What to Expect When Visiting a Dispensary

If this is your first time, don’t stress, dispensaries are built to help beginners.
Here’s the typical process:
  1. Bring your ID (you must be 21+)
  2. Check in with security/front desk
  3. Shop with a budtender (your product guide)
  4. Pick your items + check out
Pro tip: Tell your budtender you’re new. We’ll help you pick products that match your comfort level.

What About Taxes?

In Michigan, adult-use cannabis includes:
  • 6% Michigan sales tax
  • 10% excise tax (adult-use cannabis tax)
So if you’re used to seeing one price online and a slightly different price at checkout, that’s why.

Important Reminder: Don’t Drive High

Michigan takes impaired driving seriously, cannabis included.
Even if you “feel fine,” it’s not worth the risk. Enjoy it responsibly and arrange a ride if needed.

Final Tip

If you’re new, start with beginner-friendly products, ask questions, and don’t feel pressured to buy the strongest thing in the store.

Damian was the man! He got a good read to what I was after and he directed me right where I needed to be! Everyone was friendly! I was in and out in less than 10 minutes.

My first time visiting a place like this I was overwhelmed with everything. I was a little intimidated with everything cause I had no clue what I was doing. I just gave them a set price of what I wanted to spend and they was more than happy to show me a variety of flowers.
